You may not have Alzheimer’s just because you don’t remember

Just because you are not remembering as well as you used to does not mean you have Alzheimer’s disease. In fact less than ten percent of the people who suffer from worse memory as they grow older have Alzheimer’s.

The following are among the hidden causes of memory loss:

  • Depression:
Whereas in Alzheimer’s parts of the brain are actually destroyed when you are depressed your neurotransmitters, which carry messages between your neurons (nerve cells), especially serotonin and norepinephrine levels get depressed causing you to have sluggish nerve cells and hence weaker memory.
Antidepressant drugs may help by balancing neurotransmitter levels.
Also note that sometimes real Alzheimer’s begins with depression. In these cases the memory loss remains after mood improves.
A great way to boost your serotonin levels naturally (and become much more healthy) is through the healing power of laughter.
  • Circulation problems may cause a weakening of memory as the brain can only run on glucose burned aerobically (needs oxygen from the blood). Exercise, and eating good food will help improve your cardiovascular health and your memory.
  • Medications and memory – many pharmaceuticals may impair your ability to remember. These include:
    • Acid reflux and ulcer medication – E.G. Tagamet and Zantac.
    • Antianxiety drugs – Xanax and Ativan.
    • Some antibiotics – such as Cipro and Keflex.
    • Antihistamines and decongestants – such as Benadryl and Sudafed.
    • Beta-blockers – these are used for high blood pressure or heart diseas

The way to know if any medicine (or combination of medicines) are causing memory impair is to note the timing. Did problems appear after you began a new prescription? Talk to your physician if they did and switch to a similar drug.

  • Vitamin B-12 deficiency may produce memory problems and your blood level should be checked once you are over 60.
  • Thyroid dysfunction – both over and under active thyroid can cause memory problems.
  • Stress – this is the ultimate memory killer. Learn self-hypnosis, meditation or other way of relaxing.
