When I’m sixty four

In two years I’ll be sixty four and today I managed to reach a health and fitness goal I have had for a while. The goal was to reduce my waist to what it was forty years ago when I was twenty two.
So how did I manage to reduce my waist size back to what it was forty years ago?
When I was twenty two and I was not very fit but I was quite thin enough – my waist size was thirty two. I could eat anything I desired without my waist growing.
But typically as we age we increase our weight and our girth. It’s supposed to be a natural part of getting older. Although, I think it is probably caused by just eating too much unhealthy food.
Anyway, that’s what happened to me and about twenty years ago I reached my high weight of 185 pounds which was enough to make me think, “Stop or you’ll be a fat middle age man.” I started to be more careful of what I ate and even more importantly what I drank.
I cut down the drinking from about three glasses of wine or three beers a day to less than two and eventually averaging to less than one a day. In fact now, I don’t drink mostly during the week and may drink at some weekends.
Alcohol is just wasted calories and pardon the pun immediately goes to our waist. Unfortunately we don’t even notice the calories as it is not sweet and so does not make us feel full – possibly makes us eat more. Just cutting the excess alcohol lowered my weight to about 175 pounds.
Later after I went back to school and got my doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy and became a specialist in weight loss I started to give a seminar on weight management called the Michelangelo Weight Management Seminar and started to learn all about the latest weight reduction methods. I have read books upon books and articles from peer reviewed scientific articles to books for lay people.
I learned more and more about the science of weight control and nutrition – I have an MS in biochemistry. I applied these techniques to myself and my weight went down from 175 to between 160 to 165. I still wished to bring my weight to less than 160. Actually as I was exercising a lot and building muscle I really don’t care about my weight but about how well I fit in my clothes.
Even though my weight has been satisfactory for the last ten years or so, the last five pounds have been a tad challenging. I had a goal of having a waist size of thirty two again but it was not to be.
I tell my weight management clients, like me, eat plenty and plenty of good foods fruits, vegetables, lean meat especially fish, good nuts in small quantity, and plenty of water.
Recently one of my clients told me that she needed to reduce her weight so she could fit into her “special” dress this summer when her daughter is getting married. She didn’t have the time or motivation to follow my advice of having her own portion controlled diet of good foods and wanted a simple prepackaged commercial diet program to follow. I did some research into various diet programs and recommended a certain program because it was based on good science.
It was based on a low glycemic index, high fiber, portion controled high omega-3 fatty acid menu with online support. The prepackaged food was delivered to your front door and was right for my client. Again I wish to say if you have the discipline a low glycemic index diet of various healthy foods that you lovingly prepare yourself (with help of loved ones) is best, but if you cannot do that then NutriSystem is best.
I decided to alter my own food intake appropriately. So for the last two weeks I made sure I would eat even more food (totally full all the time – totally satisfied) but with very low glycemic index. I’m grazing even more and am eating I suppose seven eight mini meals a day.
So, after two weeks of eating foods that kept my blood glucose levels down my weight has been reduced by about three pounds (not so important to me as I care about how I look an not what I weigh) and my waist size is back where it was forty years ago. Soon I’ll need to buy new belts as I have reached the last notch of my belt, but that’s a good problem to have.
