Was it really better then?

I was just talking to a seventy one year old neighbor about how wonderful life is. She agreed only partially talking about the good old days. I asked her if things were in reality better then than now.

I explained that nostalgia was more apparent than real. Life is a question of swings and roundabouts. Some things have definitely deteriorated and other things are much better. I reminded her that when she was in high school in the fifties and the sixties in my case we were scared of total world annihilation in a nuclear holocaust.

I talked about how far we have moved in technology. We talked about the prices of things we take for granted like GPS, cell phones and so on. Thrity years ago GPSs only existed in air force planes and cost more than two million dollars and now you can get a tiny one for walking….

Time dims the negative memories and makes the good seem better – hence nostalgia. And it is great to feel nostalgic – it is fantastic to feel good – at the same time we can feel great about this moment in time. We can be present in the here and now which wearing our rose colored glasses as far the past is concerned.

So appreciate the present moment. Enjoy it for what it is. And appreciate and love your past for what it was.
