Ten foods for good aging

We are mind, body, soul (emotions and feelings) and spirit and we beed to feed and nourish these to age healthily. Today I want to write about some good foods to eat to keep young:

  1. Non fat plain natural yogurt. This is full of calcium, probiotics, animal protein and the lactose has been fermented so you do not react against it if like many adults you are lactose intollerant. And better still it is extremely low glycemic index and keeps your blood glucose levels level. People from the Caucuses who live a long healthy life eat a huge amount of it.
  2. The same long lived people from the Caucuses drink a huge amount of tea which is full of antioxidants. Green tea may be slightly better for you but any tea (real tea not herb teas some of which are wonderful for you) will help you age gracefully. Also there is a theory that cold water is very bad for you and hot water (like tea) is good. Of course you should not add any sugar or sugar substitute to the tea. If you do then the whole goodness is counteracted by sugar which is in reality both a mind altering drug and long acting poison.
  3. Broccoli, cabbage, and other Cruciferae vegetables may lower your risk of getting cancer. Anyway they are excellent for you.
  4. Onions and garlic. When cooked they do not have the bad odor.
  5. I don’t know about an apple a day but two three a day will lower your cholesterol by about twenty percent. They have plenty of fiber (both soluble and insoluble). It is good to mix different varieties but the red ones are best.
  6. Talking about soluble fiber lowering your cholesterol unprocessed oat or other grain based porridges  are excellent for you.
  7. Chocolate (but only dark with as little sugar as possible). As I’m writing this I’m having one small piece of dark totally unsugared cooking chocolate. It is delightful and full and full of antioxidants.
  8. Talking about antioxidants and with plenty of fiber – prunes are great in keeping you regular and young.
  9. To continue the anti-oxidant theme – drink on ounce or two of pomegranate juice a day.
  10. Soy and soy products.

There is an unfortunate belief that many have that if a little of something is good for you a lot must be better. But in reality you can have too much of anything, and also you only need a certain amount of mixed antioxidants and too much is just wasted. I’ll write more posts in this series including how to nourish your mind, soul and spirit.
