Come on in

More relatives are moving in to that in between age group this blog is about. We are young enough to have parents who need caring and often they move back to our homes and we become their caregivers.

At the same time we are old enough to have children who through the effects of the current economic downturn, divorce or other unforeseen events move back into our homes with our grand children.

And just when we thought we could have our hose to ourselves (we are between fifty to seventy) and we wanted to perhaps downsize our house, all the bedrooms are full (in fact over full) again. And just when we thought we could have peace and quite and we could love our grandchildren from the distance we become their real parents as our children do their best to get their lives back in shape.

An recent online survey discovered that 70 percent of adult children would choose their mother over their father to move in with them if their elderly parents could not take care of themselves.

The survey was conducted by Zoomerang.com and included the responses of 300 men and women between 25 and 64. Now understand that such online surveys are not scientifically valid but may be indications of what a fully valid poll may show.

The survey also found:

  • 30 percent did not want either parent to move in, citing a disruption of their lives, lack of room or inability to provide adequate care. Finances were not an issue.
  • Seventy-two percent of daughters and 58 percent of sons said they would allow their father live with them if he could not take care of himself.

It has been suggested that the differential between fathers and mothers has to do with the fact that most people think elder men can look after themselves better in nursing homes than ladies who need more of a social life.

Anyway, in the real world many people do not have the financial choice and allow their parents, children, grandchildren move in whether they like it or not out of a sense of duty and love.
