Balance on one leg to stay young
Posted Under: aging
One test of physical aging is to see how long you can balance on a single leg with eyes open and eyes closed. At the same time practicing Tai Chi , yoga
and many other low impact exercises improve your sense of balance and hence keep you young.
If you don’t want to practice these you can slow down your aging by simply improving your balance:
Become physically younger by standing between two chairs and balancing on both legs (feet together) first with eyes open and then with eyes closed. Use the chairs with your hands to balance yourself whenever you go off balance. You will notice that it is more difficult to keep you balance with your eyes closed.
Next with eyes open (still between the two chairs and using them to help you balance if needs be) balance on one leg as long as you can and then on the other leg. Finally repeat this exercise with eyes shut.
You can and should rest after each of the above practices.
At this time (August 12, 2009) I can balance myself on both feet with eyes open for more than five minutes and eyes closed for more than one. With one legged balance I can balance myself for more than forty five seconds on each leg with eyes open and about five seconds with eyes closed. I’ll report on the improvement.
